On May 19, the day of remembrance for the victims of the Pontic Greek Genocide in the Ottoman Empire, a tribute was paid to the victims of this great tragedy in the courtyard of the Greek community in Alaverdi. Tehmine Martoyan, a senior researcher at the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute (AGMI), was also in attendance.
A few days later, on May 23, the feature film "Waiting for the Clouds" by Turkish director Yeşim Ustaoğlu was screened at the AGMI. The film tells the story of crypto-Greeks living in Turkey, addressing the heavy themes of identity, memory, and silence. Numerous representatives of the Greek community in Armenia attended the screening.
Hrachya Tashchyan, the Acting Director of the AGMI, delivered opening remarks at the event. He highly valued the role of the Greek community in the life of our country, touched upon the tragic pages of the fate of the Greek people living in the Pontus region, mentioned the cultural and religious sites and monuments that no longer belong to their former owners, and emphasized the centuries-old friendship between the Armenian and Greek peoples.
Christos Sofianopoulos, the Ambassador of Greece to Armenia, expressed his gratitude for the event, which has now become a tradition. He noted that the lessons of history should be aimed at a more secure and peaceful future and the exclusion of such tragedies. Before the start of the film, Suren Manukyan, the Head of the Vahagn Dadrian Department of Comparative Genocide Studies at the AGMI, also delivered a speech. He emphasized that the Armenian and Greek peoples, having both endured the heavy experience of genocide in their history, have always stood by one another.
