Ludivine Thouverez, a researcher at the University of Poitiers, arrived in Armenia at the end of October to participate in the international conference titled "International Recognition of the Armenian Genocide: Memory, Political, and Geopolitical Landmarks of Decades of Unfinished Struggle." During her visit, she also went to the Armenian Genocide Museum. Touverez prepared a brief commentary on the French caricatures exhibited at the museum, which was published on the French satirical-focused website L'Équipe interdisciplinaire de recherche sur l'image satirique (or EIRIS).
The article presents an interesting collection of illustrations from the late 19th and early 20th-century French press, exhibited at the Armenian Genocide Museum. This collection focuses on the massacres of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire. Specifically, it highlights publications in the renowned French satirical newspapers La Presse Illustrée, L’Illustration, Le Rire, and L’Assiette au Beurre, covering topics such as the Hamidian massacres of 1894-1896, the 1909 Adana massacres, and the Armenian Genocide carried out between 1915-1923. The author points out that these images demonstrate the importance of satirical caricatures in condemning violence and serve as indirect evidence of the atrocities committed against the Armenians.
