The visit of the Greek parliamentary delegation to the Armenian Genocide Memorial

27.09.2022

The Greek parliamentary delegation, which arrived in Armenia on a working visit, visited the Armenian Genocide Memorial on September 27.

The guests were welcomed by the AGMI Director Harutyun Marutyan, who presented the history of the creation of the Memorial. She gave the delegation the history of the three khachkars placed in the Tsitsernakaberd area in memory of the Armenians who died in the massacres organized by the Azerbaijani government in the cities of Sumgait, Kirovabad (Gandzak), and Baku in the last century.

The Greek guests laid flowers at the Eternal Fire and observed a minute of silence in memory of the innocent martyrs of the Armenian Genocide. They also visited the Memory Park, where they watered the silver fir trees planted by the Greek delegations at different times.

The guests also visited the Armenian Genocide Museum accompanied by Lusine Abrahamyan and toured the permanent exhibition.

The Greek deputies paid special attention to the temporary exhibition “Smyrna in the context of the Armenian and Greek genocides: annihilation, arson and deportation (September 1922)”, opened on 14 September, which was presented by the author of the exhibition, AGMI senior researcher Tehmine Martoyan.

At the end of the visit members of the delegation left notes in the Memory Book for Honorable Guests.

Expressing his thanks for the visit, AGMI Director Harutyun Marutyan presented the guest with the book “The Genocide of the Ottoman Greeks. Reports from the USA Press 1913-1922,” which presents articles on the Greeks massacres published in the American press during 1913-1922, and a book about the Japanese ship Tokei Maru, which saved the lives of many Greeks and Armenians in 1922, and a postcard issued on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Smyrna disaster.
