BRAZILIAN FEDERAL SENATE UNANIMOUSLY ADOPTED A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

30.05.2015

On May 27, Brazilian Federal Senate unanimously adopted resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide. Resolution No 550/2015 was introduced by the Chairman of Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs and National Defense, Federal Senator Aloizio Nunez Fereira Filio and Federal Senator Jose Sera.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs the resolution passed by the Brazilian Senate reads: “The Federal Senate of Brazil recognizes the Armenian nation’s Genocide, whose 100th anniversary was observed on April 24, 2015. It pays homage to the Genocide victims and appreciates the contribution made by the thousands of Brazilian-Armenian descendants of the Armenian refugees to the country’s social, economic and cultural life. The Senate emphasizes that never ever should any crime of genocide be forgotten in order not to be repeated”.

RA Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandyan issued a statement regarding the resolution, welcoming the resolution adopted by the Brazilian Federal Senate on recognizing the Armenian Genocide.

“With the adoption of this Resolution Brazil made a significant step in support of international community’s efforts in the prevention of acts of genocide and new crimes against humanity”.
